Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a police check?
Formally known as a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, a police check can be ordered through bodies accredited by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC). CVCheck is accredited by ACIC to perform police checks in Australia.
How long does a police check last?
Formally known as a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, a police check is a ‘point-in-time’ check and is current as of the date of issue. A police check has no formal period of validity. However, many employers and organisations only accept a police check that has been issued in the past 12 months.
What is the cost of a police check?
Formally known as a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, a police check costs $49.90 including GST.
How long does a police check take?
The majority of police checks are processed, and the results returned within 1 business day.
However, approximately 30% of all these checks ordered within Australia are referred for manual processing. If this occurs, the result may take from 1 – 15 business days to be returned.
Processing of police checks can take longer if the applicant shares similar details with other individuals recorded in police databases, particularly if they have a common name. It is therefore always recommended that applicants order their police check at least 2 weeks before the certificate is required.
What is the difference between a police check and a criminal history check?
There is no difference between a police check and a criminal history check in Australia. Since July 2018, the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC), the government body that regulates police checks, formally applied the title of Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) to all police checks in Australia.
A police check in Australia may sometimes be referred to as a:
- National Police Check (NPC)
- National Police History Check (NPHC)
- National Criminal History Check (NCHC)
- National Criminal Record Check (NCRC)
- State Police Check (no longer available)
